Kicking off Alaskan kelp research in Napa, CA

Grapevines in Napa, CA that will be receiving their first application of Kelpex Liquid Kelp Plant Biostimulant soon!

Pacific Kelp Company is excited to share an update on our ongoing SEC-funded research project, which seeks to identify attractive agricultural markets for Alaskan kelp products (like our Kelpex plant biostimulant product made from Alaskan Giant Kelp!) Through our collaboration with Dr. Bhaskar Bondada of Washington State University, and several forward-thinking partner vineyards, we’re exploring how kelp-based plant biostimulants can enhance soil health and wine grape quality while potentially also improving the sustainability of vineyard operations. To study the latter goal we will be withholding normal irrigation levels to drought-stress the vines and collecting data on how well the Alaskan kelp plant biostimulant enhances the vine's resilience to stress. If successful, this may lead vineyards to use less overall water for their wine grape cultivation and improve their overall resilience in the face of drought!
This work is a crucial step in our mission to integrate kelp-based solutions into agricultural systems. We are focused on the science and data behind soil health enrichment, plant stress tolerance, and crop quality to ensure we are building a strong foundation for the long-term adoption of Alaskan kelp products. Working directly with the eventual end users of Alaskan kelp products ensures that we are testing in real-world conditions and that any learnings from these studies will be directly applicable to the needs of commercial vineyards.
Stay tuned for more updates, including an update from our partners at Cornell University on the great work they're doing with kelp and turfgrass systems!
Introducing our first intern, Shelby Thompson, a student from the University of Alaska Fairbanks
|
|
Shelby is a a Fisheries Major at the University of Alaska Fairbanks originally from the Midwest. She had the opportunity to participate in the Students2Startups program, which allowed her to work directly with an Alaskan start-up company of her choosing. Shelby has always been guided by a strong moral compass, often asking herself “how can we do better?” and “how can we be more sustainable?” and she strives to work towards those goals in everything that she does. Shelby chose to work with Pacific Kelp Company because she believes in our mission of creating a more sustainable future through the power of kelp (especially in agricultural systems!)
Shelby will be working with us over the next 10 weeks to assist in the go-to-market strategy for our Kelpex product and in building a sales funnel of happy customers! Stay tuned for more updates on the awesome work Shelby is doing!
